St Lucius, the main patron saint of the Diocese of Chur, (wooden sculpture from the Cazis monastery, from about 1320, photo: Landesmuseum Zurich.)

St Lucius

Royal missionary in Rhaetia (died 5th/6th century)

St Lucius, or Luzi as he is affectionately known in Graubünden, is regarded as one of the missionaries of Rhaetia. Some sources say he was a martyr, others that he was saved from death in a well shaft on the St. Luziensteig. According to historical accounts, St Lucius came from Britain, was a king, abdicated and then brought Christianity to the region around Chur as a missionary. The St. Lucius Church with its round Carolingian crypt is proof that he has been venerated in Chur since AD 800. St Lucius is the main patron saint of the Diocese of Chur and a popular Christian name in Graubünden. Memorial day: 2 December. <More>
