The largest Christian Church in Switzerland

Numerically, the Roman Catholic is the largest of the Christian cantonal churches in Switzerland. Thanks to immigration of foreigners from traditionally Catholic countries, the total number of Catholics in Switzerland increased slightly between 1980 and 2000 (according to the census) despite members actually leaving the Church.

The Roman Catholic Church of Switzerland is made up of its believers as a whole. It is organised into six dioceses Local churches and parishes with their deaneries and parishes. Religious orders, monasteries and places of pilgrimage together with other spiritual and charitable organisations complete the picture. Last but not least it also consists of a broad range of rich cultural assets (church music and religious art, tradition, learning) that the Roman Catholic Church has brought forth during the more than 1700 years that it has been actively involved in Switzerland.
