Law of the Church and the State

The Roman Catholic cantonal churches, also known as «Landeskirchen» or churches of a region, are located on ground that is subject to constitutional law and are united within the Roman Catholic Central Conference of Switzerland (RKZ).

At the “lowest” level, the actual place where meetings take place, both corporate bodies, the parish that is subject to church law and the parish assembly that is subject to the laws of Switzerland, are united to form a lively unit: the believers in the parish attend a church service together, and the parish assembly as an organisation is the means to this end.

Church and State are strictly separated in the cantons of Geneva and Neuchâtel, which is why there are no «cantonal churches» there. Church parishes as statutory bodies are also unknown in the canton of Valais.
