Dioceses and territorial abbacies

... but no archbishop

Roman Catholic Switzerland comprises six dioceses and two so-called territorial abbacies, Einsiedeln and St. Maurice d'Agaune. Unlike other countries, the Swiss dioceses do not belong to an ecclesiastical province. When it was founded in 1863, the Swiss Bishops Conference (SBK) was the world’s first gathering of a country’s bishops.

Switzerland does not have an archbishop. The reason for this is probably attributable to the country’s federal structure. If one takes this structure into consideration, there is simply no obvious place for an archbishop to be.
