Einsiedeln SZ
Chapel of grace and Black Madonna

Einsiedeln with St Meinrad as its “initiator” is regarded as the most important place of pilgrimage and the spiritual centre of Switzerland. In particular, Our Lady of the Hermits, the Black Madonna, and the chapel of grace are venerated. The main feast days are the feast day of Meinrad on 21 January, the “Engelweihe” (Consecration of the Angels) on 14 September and the annual Marian feast days. Thousands and thousands of Christians from home and abroad make a pilgrimage to Einsiedeln every year, either as part of the so-called cantonal pilgrimages of the Catholic cantons, in organised groups or privately.
